Crear un auto volador siempre fue una de las grandes metas de las terminales. Pero, ahora, con la llegada de las nuevas tecnologías, es cuestión de tiempo (poco) para que aquello que fue una fantasía en los albores de la industria se haga realidad.
EL AUTO VOLADOR COMPLETÓ SUS PRUEBAS
Uno de los caminos más directos para lograr ese cometido es, aparentemente, aplicar la misma tecnología que se utiliza en los drones aunque, claro, para que sea un automóvil debe, además, tener ruedas…
Como sea, en estas líneas no vamos a debatir la filosofía del auto volador, sino que repasaremos una noticia que se acaba de dar a conocer: presentaron el primer auto volador de carreras del mundo. Presentada así parece toda una “bomba noticiosa”, pero cuando la leemos en detalle no es más que otro intento: no hay ruedas.
Despegue vertical
El protagonista de la novedad se llama Airspeeder Mk3 y es definido por la compañía que lo produce (la australiana Alauda) como un vehículo eléctrico de despegue y aterrizaje vertical operado a distancia (eVTOL, siglas de electric vertical takeoff and landing o despegue y aterrizaje vertical eléctrico).
Fue creado para competir, primero, en una categoría en la que los vehículos serán piloteados de forma remota y que se convertirá en un banco de pruebas técnico para las competencias tripuladas en 2022 con el Airspeeder Mk4.
El fabricante producirá, inicialmente, más de diez vehículos idénticos que serán suministrados a los equipos en 2021 para iniciar las pruebas antes de fin de año.
Un dato interesante a tener en cuenta es que Alauda está desarrollando estas unidades con la participación de Mclaren, Babcock Aviation, Boeing, Jaguar-Land Rover, Rolls-Royce y Brabham.
Airspeeder: motor eléctrico
El Mk3 cuenta con un marco y un fuselaje de fibra de carbono, pero el Mk4 utilizará una carrocería monocasco de fibra de carbono.
Además, ambos modelos suman sistema LiDAR y radares para incrementar la seguridad y evitar colisiones.
En cuanto al motor, el Mk3 emplea un sistema eléctrico de 96 kW que, gracias a un peso del orden de los 100 kilogramos le permiten alcanzar los 120 km/h de velocidad máxima.
Esa potencia se transmite a los deslizadores (así llaman en la jerga a las hélices) dispuestos en una formación de “octocóptero X”. Esto proporciona importantes ventajas a los pilotos en términos de maniobrabilidad y estabilidad, ya que le permite, por ejemplo, tomar curvas muy cerradas, pero con la tercera dimensión añadida ya que puede moverse verticalmente. La configuración del octocóptero agrega una medida importante de redundancia del vehículo y garantizará que la nave pueda aterrizar de manera segura y mantener el control si falla un rotor o un sistema de batería.
Airspeeder: la carrera
Cuando a fines de este año empiecen las primeras competencias, Airspeeder GP incluirá paradas rápidas en boxes. Para eso, los ingenieros de Alauda han desarrollado un sistema de deslizamiento y bloqueo para la rápida extracción y reemplazo de las baterías.
También los equipos podrán adaptar la estrategia de la batería según los requisitos dinámicos de cada sección particular de la carrera. Por ejemplo, para recorridos que requieren más maniobrabilidad pero menos velocidad en línea recta, se puede seleccionar un paquete de baterías más liviano para brindar más maniobrabilidad a costa de potencia bruta o resistencia.
