La ONG belga Corvia anunció este miércoles que ha recibido finalmente autorización para abrir el primer “buzón” para abandonar recién nacidos de forma anónima en Bruselas.
Tras tres años de litigio, la asociación ha sido autorizada a abrir este sistema en el distrito bruselense de Evere, que permitirá a los padres que quieran renunciar a su hijo abandonarlo de forma anónima.
El Consejo de Estado ha anulado la prohibición que había emitido el exalcalde del distrito Pierre Muylle, según confirmó hoy la asociación a la agencia Belga.
“Nos felicitamos, porque cada niño debería tener derecho a un futuro”, declaró la portavoz de Corvia Mathilde Pelsers a ese medio, al tiempo que confió en poder abrir el “buzón” oficialmente a principios de octubre.
El dispositivo estaba previsto que fuera instalado el 21 de septiembre de 2017, pero el anterior alcalde lo prohibió ese mismo día.
La ONG inició entonces un procedimiento en el Consejo de Estado para anular esa decisión, con el argumento de que no incitaba al abandono de los menores sino que “ofrecía una posibilidad a las madres de dejar a su hijo con seguridad”.
Así, la prohibición queda anulada y cuenta además con el apoyo del actual alcalde de Evere, el también socialista Ridouane Chahid.
El primer “buzón para bebés” de Bélgica se instaló en Amberes (norte) hace 20 años.
La polémica iniciativa ya existe en Estados Unidos, donde 13 buzones para depositar bebés no deseados fueron instalados a principios de 2019 en los estados de Indiana, Ohio y Arizona. Se trató de una iniciativa de la organización estadounidense Safe Heaven Baby Boxes (SHBB) que persigue la disminución de las muertes provocadas por el abandono de recién nacidos en las calles.
El proyecto, fundado por Mónica Kelsey en 2016, propone una alternativa a los llamados “refugios seguros” ofrecidos por el gobierno, los cuales exigen la identificación de las madres que dejan a sus hijos en ellos.
“Las personas que toman esa dura decisión suelen ser muy jóvenes y no quieren que nadie se entere de lo sucedido”, explicó Kelsey. “Frente a los sentimientos de vergüenza y de culpa que esto les genera, muchas eligen abandonar a sus bebés en las puertas de hospitales, comisarías o estaciones de bomberos”, remató.
A diferencia de esos casos, en los que los recién nacidos pueden permanecer a la intemperie durante largos períodos de tiempo y morir por frío o desnutrición, los buzones diseñados por SHBB cuentan con una alarma silenciosa en su interior que da aviso a emergencias luego de 30 segundos. Además, las identidades de los padres se mantienen en el anonimato.
