Cada 14 de mayo se celebra el Día del Futbolista Argentino. Se trata de una fecha en la que se rinde homenaje a los jugadores nacionales y se conmemora un nuevo aniversario del día en que Ernesto Grillo convirtió un gol emblemático con la camiseta de la Selección.
La selección argentina enfrentó a su similar de Inglaterra en un partido amistoso el 14 de mayo de 1953 en un estadio Monumental colmado por 85 mil hinchas. Por aquel entonces, el conjunto nacional tenía como entrenador a Guillermo Stábile.
La visita se puso en ventaja con un tanto de Taylor, pero pronto llegaría una conquista que marcaría un antes y después en el fútbol argentino. Grillo avanzó por la izquierda y dejó a tres rivales en el camino. Se metió en el área y llegó hasta la línea de fondo. Ante la salida del arquero inglés, definió casi sin ángulo al primer palo y marcó el tanto que, a partir de ese día, sería recordado como “El gol imposible”.
Ya en la segunda parte, Rodolfo Micheli y el propio Grillo, con su segunda conquista de la tarde, decretaron el triunfo por 3-1 para el conjunto “Albiceleste”.
La revancha de aquel amistoso se jugó tres días más tarde, también en el estadio Monumental, pero no pudo completarse por las intensas lluvias y fue suspendido a los 22 minutos del primer tiempo.
Es así como, en homenaje a la gran conquista de Grillo, cada 14 de mayo se celebra el Día del Futbolista Argentino para homenajear a los protagonistas del deporte.
