La perforación del Pozo Nº 1 comenzó en febrero de 1916. Estuvo a cargo del Ing. Enrique Canepa, de la Dirección General de Minas, Geología e Hidrología de la Nación. Alcanzar el horizonte petrolífero entre los 603 y 606 metros demandó 20 meses de arduo trabajo. A partir del descubrimiento, el Poder Ejecutivo Nacional estableció como zona de reserva del Estado al área comprendida por un octógono de 5 km de radio, tomando como centro al Pozo “Patria”. Este pozo descubridor alcanzó una profundidad final de 1.060 metros (con fines de estudio), costó 110.000 pesos de la época, produjo 12.655 litros de petróleo al año 1918 y marcó un punto de inflexión en la historia neuquina.
